Which is better for your eyes: e-reader or book?
Many people think that reading on a screen is automatically worse for your eyes than reading a paper book. But is that actually true? The answer is more nuanced than often thought.
Both a paper book and an e-reader have pros and cons when it comes to eye comfort. The most important question is not just what you read, but how you read.
Is a paper book better for your eyes?
Paper books have several clear advantages:
- No self-illuminated screen
- High contrast between text and paper
- No electronic stimuli
For many people, reading on paper therefore feels natural and familiar. Especially in good light, the eyes can read comfortably without extra strain.
However, paper books are not always inherently better. Small font, poor lighting, or an awkward reading position can also lead to tired eyes when reading paper books.
What about e-readers?
An e-reader is very different from a tablet or smartphone. Modern e-readers use e-ink screens, which display text in a way that closely resembles paper.
Characteristics of an e-reader:
- No bright, direct screen light
- Calm text display
- Adjustable font size and contrast
- Suitable for long reading sessions
The built-in lighting of an e-reader usually comes from the side of the screen and illuminates the page evenly, instead of shining light directly into the eyes. This makes reading more pleasant than on a tablet or laptop.
Readability: letters and contrast
With paper books, the contrast is fixed: black letters on white paper. This is pleasant for many people to read, but offers little flexibility.
E-readers, however, offer adaptability:
- larger font size
- different fonts
- adjusted margins
- warmer or cooler light
For people with tired eyes or reduced vision, this can actually be an advantage.
Reading in good light is essential
Whether you read on paper or on an e-reader: good light is crucial. Poor lighting forces your eyes to work harder, which quickly leads to fatigue.
With paper, you depend on ambient light or a reading lamp.
With an e-reader, you can adjust the lighting to the time of day, which makes reading more consistent.
E-reader and sleep: what to look out for?
Research shows that bright, blue light just before bedtime can disrupt sleep. This applies especially to tablets, smartphones, and laptops.
E-readers are an exception here:
- they emit much less blue light
- many models have a warmer night mode
- the light intensity is low and adjustable
Yet, even here: do not read in bright light and give your eyes rest before going to sleep.
Why an e-reader is better than a tablet
Although many people read digitally on a tablet, it is less pleasant for the eyes. Tablets use bright, backlit screens that continuously emit light.
E-readers are specially designed for reading:
- calmer for the eyes
- fewer stimuli
- longer concentration possible
If you want to read digitally, an e-reader is always a better choice than a tablet or phone.
What is ultimately better for your eyes?
There is no definitive answer. Both a paper book and an e-reader can be pleasant for your eyes, provided you use them correctly.
More important than the medium are:
- good lighting
- taking regular breaks
- comfortable reading
- a relaxed reading posture
With an e-reader, you have extra control over font size and light, which for many people actually leads to less eye strain.
Reading without tired eyes
Whatever form you choose: listen to your eyes. Take breaks occasionally, look away for a moment, and ensure relaxation while reading.
