Hoe organiseer je je TBR-lijst? 7 bewezen strategieën

How do you organize your TBR list? 7 proven strategies

A TBR (To Be Read) list is a wonderful thing… until it gets too big.
What starts as enthusiasm sometimes turns into choice paralysis. So many books, so many options – and in the end, you read nothing.

Good news: you don't have to make your TBR list smaller, just organize it smarter. With these 7 strategies, you'll maintain an overview and enjoyment in reading.

1. Keep your TBR in one place

The biggest mistake is spreading your TBR across notes, screenshots, bookshelves, and lists in your head. Choose one fixed place:

  • a note
  • a simple document
  • a list on your e-reader

Not perfect, but clear. That's enough.

2. Limit your active TBR

You don't need to have everything "active" at once. Distinguish between:

  • Total TBR (everything you ever want to read)
  • Active TBR (e.g., 5–10 books)

Everything else can wait. That immediately removes pressure.

3. Choose in advance (not at the moment)

Choice paralysis often arises when you want to read. Solve this by choosing in advance.
For example, lay out 2 or 3 books from which you can choose for the coming period.

This way, reading becomes a choice, not a decision.

4. Organize by feeling, not just by genre

Genre is helpful, but mood is often more important. Think of categories such as:

  • light & relaxing
  • in-depth
  • short chapters
  • slow & atmospheric

This way, you'll pick something that matches how you feel more quickly.

5. Give yourself permission to stop

Not finishing a book is not a failure. It's information.
If a book isn't working:

  • put it back on your TBR
  • or remove it permanently

Your TBR is not a contract, but an invitation.

6. Keep it visually calm

Too many books in sight can be overwhelming.
Place your active TBR:

  • separately
  • in a fixed spot
  • or digitally on your e-reader

The calmer the eye, the easier you start.

7. Leave room for spontaneity

An organized TBR doesn't mean everything is set in stone. Sometimes you want:

  • something new
  • something unexpected
  • something completely different

That's allowed. Reading is not project management.

TBR is there to help you, not to stress you

Your TBR list is not an obligation. It's a tool to enjoy reading more, not to create guilt.

The clearer and calmer your TBR, the more often you'll actually read something from it.
