Een zeer korte geschiedenis van e-books

A Very Brief History of E-books

A very brief history of e-books

E-books may seem like a modern invention, but they have been around much longer than most people realize. Digital reading was not an overnight success, but the result of decades of development, experimentation, and technological breakthroughs.

The beginning: digital books before the internet

The origin of the e-book is often traced back to 1971, when Michael Hart started Project Gutenberg. His goal was simple yet ambitious: to make literary classics digitally available to everyone.

This initiative laid the foundation for digital reading, long before e-readers existed. Yet, for many years, the e-book remained a niche. The technology was there, but not yet suitable for comfortable reading.

The first attempts: too early for their time

In the 1990s, the first devices specifically designed for digital texts appeared. Think of early e-readers and digital assistants. They were innovative, but:

  • clumsy to use
  • technically complex
  • not pleasant for long texts

In addition, a standard file format was missing. Books often only worked on one device, which limited reader confidence. As a result, the general public still stuck with paper.

The breakthrough of e-ink

A real step forward came in the mid-2000s with the introduction of e-ink screens. These screens mimicked paper and were much easier on the eyes than traditional displays.

For the first time, digital reading became:

  • comfortable
  • energy-efficient
  • suitable for longer reading sessions

This was the moment when e-readers began to resemble a full-fledged alternative to paper books.

The modern e-book era

From this point, the e-book truly began to gain ground. Major providers linked e-readers to online bookstores, making it easier for a broad audience to buy and read e-books.

The combination of:

  • user-friendly devices
  • extensive digital book collections
  • affordable prices

led to rapid growth in e-books, especially in the United States and later also in Europe.

Global growth and acceptance

After this breakthrough, the e-book market grew internationally. Various providers contributed to the further development of e-readers and reading apps. Kobo played an important role here, especially outside the United States, with a strong focus on reading comfort and accessibility.

Although growth curves are now flattening in some markets, e-books are here to stay. Today, they are an integral part of how people read — alongside paper, not instead of it.

Where are we now?

Modern e-readers are light, energy-efficient, and designed for peace and focus. They offer:

  • adjustable font sizes
  • screen lighting for day and night
  • space for thousands of books

What is becoming increasingly important is how comfortably you read. Not only the device matters, but also how you read, the posture you adopt, and how much peace you experience while reading.

The future of digital reading

The future of e-books is less about more technology and more about better reading experiences. Comfort, simplicity, and focus are becoming increasingly important — especially now that we spend so much time behind screens every day.

Veloura aligns with this. Not by replacing e-readers, but by supplementing them with solutions that make reading more pleasant, such as hands-free reading and ergonomic comfort.
